Khaira Signs Two-Year Extension With Oilers

EDMONTON – Former Michigan Tech hockey player Jujhar Khaira recently signed a two-year contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers. Khaira has appeared in 25 games for the Oilers throughout his career and has three career NHL points with a goal and two assists.

Khaira is a 22-year old forward and was selected by Edmonton in the third round (63rd overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft. The 6-foot-3, 214-pound forward has accumulated 57 points (22G, 35A) and 164 penalty minutes in 133 career AHL games with the Oklahoma City Barons and the Bakersfield Condors.

Khaira played 10 games for the Oilers in 2016-17 and scored his first career NHL goal on January 16 against the Arizona Coyotes. He became the third player of Punjabi Indian descent to score a goal in the NHL, after Robin Bawa and half-French, half-Indian Manny Malhotra. He also tallied 20 points (8 goals, 12 assists) in 27 games for the Condors last season.

Khaira, a native of Surrey, British Columbia, tallied six goals and 19 assists for 25 total points in his only season with the Huskies in 2012-13. He finished tied for fourth on the team in scoring and played in all 37 games. He was named WCHA Rookie of the Week on November 20 after leading Tech to a pair of overtime wins at Bemidji State with two goals and an assist.

The new deal pays Khaira $675,000 per season. He is not protected for the Las Vegas expansion draft that will take place on Wednesday (June 21).
