Sturos Scores Twice as Huskies Defeat Chargers Friday Play Video

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Michigan Tech hockey team defeated Alabama Huntsville 5-2 Friday (Jan. 27) night to remain unbeaten in its last eight WCHA games. Reid Sturos had a pair of goals and Gavin Gould had a goal and two assists to fuel the Huskies who improved to 16-9-6 overall and 13-3-5-2 in league play.

"I was a little disappointed with our third period tonight," Tech coach Mel Pearson said. "The five goals are great, but I don't like the goals against.

"The points are important in the standings, so we'll look at some things on film and be ready tomorrow night. We're in a championship chase and right in the thick of things here for the MacNaughton Cup. We need to play championship hockey for 60 minutes."

Tech jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the game. Mitch Reinke buried his third goal of the season—and second in three games—with a long one-timer from just inside the blue line 6:02 into the game. Cliff Watson assisted with a cross-ice pass and Gould added the secondary helper.

Thomas Beretta scored his second of the season 3:01 later, burying on a partial breakaway. Gould assisted on the play after keeping the puck in the offensive zone and feeding the streaking Beretta.

Sturos scored his fifth of the season with 35 seconds left in the second period, burying his second shorthanded goal of his career. Michael Neville carried the puck in the zone on a 2-on-1 and fed Sturos in the center of the ice for the backhanded tap in.

Gould then buried a power play goal—his fifth tally of the season—6:58 into the third. He cleaned up a rebound in front of the net with Joel L'Esperance and Matt Roy getting assists after getting whacks in before Gould finally put it in.

UAH (7-18-2, 7-12-2-0 WCHA) got on the board 21 seconds later when Tyler Poulsen scored from Madison Dunn and Max McHugh.

Jordan Larson brought the home team to within two with 5:20 left in the game, but Sturos sealed the win with a shorthanded, empty net tally with 1:19 left on a long shot from outside the blue line.

Tech dominated in shots 41-17 and were 1-for-4 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill, including being down 5-on-3 for 1:09 in the first period.

Angus Redmond finished with 15 saves while Matt Larose had 36 saves for the Chargers.

The Huskies trail the WCHA's top team Bemidji State by six points after the game. The Beavers are wrapping up nonconference play this week and entered the weekend with two more league games played than the Huskies. The two will meet next weekend in Bemidji.
