Huskies Sweep Bowling Green With 2-1 Win Saturday.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Jake Lucchini scored the game-winning goal in the third period for the second night in a row as the Michigan Tech hockey team swept Bowling Green with a 2-1 win Saturday (Dec. 12) from the Slater Family Ice Arena.

It was Tech's fourth WCHA sweep of the season as the Black and Gold improved to 12-7-3 overall and 11-3-2-1 in the WCHA.

"This weekend was a big six points and a great way to finish the first half of the season," Tech coach Mel Pearson said. "It's a tough place to play against the team that was picked to win our league. They have a lot of talent and play very physical. Our team defense was outstanding, and we got another big goal from Jake Lucchini."

Like Friday night, the home team took a 1-0 lead in the second period. This time it was Michigan Tech's Jake Jackson scoring the equalizer 4:21 after BGSU's goal. Cliff Watson chipped the puck up to Jackson who took a wrist shot from the top of the circle into the top corner of the net for his fourth goal of the season.

Lucchini's scored his nation-leading fifth game-winner with 11:29 left in the third period. Matt Roy took a shot from the point that BGSU goaltender Ryan Bednard saved, but Lucchini was waiting at the doorstep to bury his seventh of the season. Joel L'Esperance added the secondary assist.

The Huskies had to kill off plenty of pressure by the Falcons in the late stages of the game. The home team added the extra attacker with 2:00 remaining and then went on the power play with 30.5 seconds left after a hooking penalty.

The Falcons kept applying pressure, but the Huskies calmly cleared the puck out of harms way as the large contingent of Michigan Tech fans went crazy.

BGSU (8-10-2, 7-6-1-1 WCHA) wasn't able to get a puck through to goaltender Angus Redmondlate in the period as Watson, Reid Sturos, and Michael Neville all blocked shots.

Tech outshot BG 31-23, allowing only four shots in the crucial third period. The Huskies have now outshot their opponents in 12 straight games and are 11-3-3 overall this season when they register more shots on goal.

Matt Meier scored the lone goal for the Falcons 9:49 into the second. John Schilling and Chris Pohlkamp assisted on the play.

Redmond improved to 11-2-1 with the win, stopping 22-of-23 shots Saturday and 47-of-49 on the weekend. He had to stand tall in the first 4:00 of the second period, making six saves when BGSU applied some offensive pressure.

Redmond continues to lead the country with a 1.40 goals against average. He is also fifth with a .937 save percentage and sixth with a .821 winning percentage.

The Huskies are off until the 52nd annual Great Lakes Invitational—the final GLI at Joe Louis Arena. Tech plays Michigan for the third time this season on December 29. Michigan State and Western Michigan faceoff in the second semifinal.

"We're the only team in college hockey that hasn't had a weekend off yet since the first day of official practice," added Pearson. "Playing 15 road games is tough, and I'm proud of this team right now. We need this break, but I'm excited for the second half."
