Phillips Nominated For Mike Richter Award

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. – Michigan Tech junior goaltender Jamie Phillips was named one of the 28 nominees for the 2015 Mike Richter Award presented by Let's Play Hockey and the Herb Brooks Foundation on Friday (Feb. 27). Mike Richter will present the second annual award at the 2015 NCAA Frozen Four in Boston.

Phillips, a native of Caledonia, Ontario and Winnipeg Jets draft pick, leads the nation with 23 wins. He has played the fifth most minutes between the pipes in the country for the No. 3-ranked Huskies. Phillips ranks fourth in winning percentage (78.3), sixth in goals against average (1.76), and sixth in save percentage (93.4).

Phillips is also a Hobey Baker candidate and owns a 3.38 grade-point average in exercise science. He is a volunteer coach at the Superior School of Gymnastics and has volunteered with Koaches Kids (reading books at local elementary schools) and the Calumet Hockey Association, coaching goaltending skills.

Phillips has started every game for the Huskies this season, has four shutouts, and has stopped at least 30 shots 10 times with a season-high 38 saves vs. Minnesota Duluth on Dec. 12.

LIST OF CANDIDATES

The 28 candidates combined for a 2.13 goals-against average, a .925 save percentage and a grade-point average of 3.15.

Candidates for the Mike Richter Award were determined by nominations from all 59 NCAA Division I men's hockey head coaches. The finalists and winner will be selected by a committee of coaches, scouts and members of the media. The five finalists for the 2015 Mike Richter Award will be announced on Wednesday, March 18.

Criteria for the Mike Richter Award:

  • Candidates must display outstanding skills on the ice
  • Candidates should be in good academic standing at an NCAA college or university
  • Consideration should be given to academic achievement and sportsmanship
  • Candidates must comply with all NCAA rules; be full-time students at an NCAA college or university; and complete 50 percent or more of the season
  • Consideration should be given to the candidate's activities in the community
