Men's Basketball Hands Out Team Awards

HOUGHTON, Mich. — The Michigan Tech men's basketball today announced its team award winners for 2014-15. Senior Ben Stelzer (Manitowoc, Wis.), who was an All-American and Academic All-American, was selected as the Ken Hamar Award winner as most valuable player.

Stelzer received All-America honors from both the NABC and Daktronics and was named Capital One Academic All-America Second Team, Daktronics Midwest Player of the Year, GLIAC Player of the Year and All-GLIAC First Team in 2014-15. The senior guard led all players in the Midwest Region in scoring (22.1 points per game) and ranked second in the nation in 3-point field goals made per game (3.96). He was also among the national leaders in scoring and 3-point percentage (45.7).

Junior Jordan Chartier (Chatham, Mich.) earned the Bill Gappy Award as the team's most improved player. The 6-2 point guard started all 28 games and averaged 10.1 points per game, up from 4.8 as a sophomore. Chartier led the GLIAC and ranked fourth nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio at 3.31-to-1 after posting 96 assists with just 29 turnovers on the year. He also averaged 4.4 rebounds per game and shot 40.3 percent from 3-point range. Chartier was an All-GLIAC Second Team and GLIAC All-Defensive Team selection in 2014-15.

The Bob Olson Award for the team's outstanding newcomer went to freshman Dillon Gordon (Trout Creek, Mich.). The 5-10 guard played in all 28 games, averaging 3.0 points per game. He made 21 of his 28 field goals on the season from behind the 3-point arc while shooting 38.9 percent from long range.

Senior Troy Hecht (Vassar, Mich.) gained the Harold Meese Sportsmanship Award. He played in all 28 games and started 18 of them, giving him 61 starts for his career. The 6-3 guard averaged 1.2 points and 3.0 rebounds per game and played a huge role defensively for the Huskies.

Junior center Kyle Stankowski (Mosinee, Wis.) took home the scholastic achievement award for the third consecutive year with his 3.92 cumulative grade point average in electrical engineering. The 6-9 Stankowski played in all 28 games and averaged 8.5 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. He earned Capital One Academic All-District honors for his athletic and academic success.

Michigan Tech compiled a 19-9 overall record in 2014-15 with the program's third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.
