Stelzer Named Midwest Region Player of the Year

HOUGHTON, Mich. — Senior Ben Stelzer (Manitowoc, WIs.) from the Michigan Tech men's basketball team was today named the 2015 Daktronics/Division II Conference Commissioners Association Midwest Region Player of the Year. He is the first region player of the year in school history.

Stelzer, who was tabbed the 2015 GLIAC Player of the Year last week, is averaging 22.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.1 steals per game for the Huskies this season. The 6-1 guard native has also connected on 108 three pointers, hitting 46 percent of his tries from long range. He leads the nation in 3-point field goals made per game (4.0) and ranks among the national leaders in scoring and 3-point percentage (46.0). Stelzer, with 597 points this season, has totaled 1,734 career points—seventh most in Michigan Tech history. He also reset Tech's record for 3-pointers made (360). Stelzer was the preseason GLIAC Player of the Year and four-time GLIAC Player of the Week during the 2014-15 campaign that saw the Huskies finish second in the GLIAC standings.

As the Midwest Region Player of the Year, Stelzer will be one of eight players on the Daktronics National Player of the Year ballot. He was also placed on the All-Midwest Region First Team, making him eligible to be selected for the Daktronics All-America Team.

The Michigan Tech men's basketball plays in a NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament quarterfinal tomorrow (Mar. 14) vs. No. 15-ranked Indianapolis. Tipoff at Bellarmine's Knights Hall in Louisville, Ky., is set for 12 noon.
