Men's Hoops Picked to Win GLIAC North; Stelzer Preseason Player of the Year

BAY CITY, Mich. — The Michigan Tech men's basketball team was picked to win the GLIAC North Division, and Ben Stelzer was named the GLIAC Preseason Player of the Year it was announced by the league today on its GLIAC Men's Basketball Media Day website.

The Huskies earned 10 of the 16 available first-place votes and garnered 121 points in the preseason poll to outdistance second-place Grand Valley State (100). Lake Superior State (95), Hillsdale (74), Northwood (71), Ferris State (56), Saginaw Valley State (38) and Northern Michigan (21) rounded out the North Division.

The South Division favorite is Findlay (125) followed by Walsh (114), Wayne State (90), Malone (79), Ashland (69), Tiffin (46), Lake Erie (32) and Ohio Dominican (21).

Stelzer is Tech's second GLIAC Preseason Player of the Year in the last three years (Ali Haidar, 2012-13). The 6-1 senior guard averaged 17.8 points per game a year ago and ranked fourth nationally in 3-pointers made. He shot .426 from behind the arc to lead the GLIAC and rank third in the country in that category.

A total of 20 different GLIAC players were honored on Preseason All-GLIAC lists with a first and second team being selected in each division.
