Men’s Basketball Receives NABC Academic Awards

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Michigan Tech men's basketball team received the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award and nine student-athletes were named to the NABC Honor Court for the 2013-14 season.

"I think it's awesome for our team because it's another successful thing that happened to us this year," Tech coach Kevin Luke said. "Our staff has said this all along, and we preach it to the guys, that there's a direct correlation between the success on the court and in the classroom."

The second annual  Team Academic Excellence Awards, created by the NABC Committee on Academics, were awarded to more than 125 colleges and universities, recognizing outstanding academic achievement by a team with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better for the 2013-14 season. The Huskies were one of four GLIAC teams honored.

Austin Armga, Alex Culy, Jeff Gregory, Troy Hecht, Luke Heller, Kyle Stankowski, Ben Stelzer, Nicholas Stoll and James Wezensky were named to the Honor Court.

Close to 900 student-athletes from more than 335 colleges and universities were named to the Honor Court. The nine Huskies honored were the tied for the second most awarded to a team in the nation across all divisions.

"This group was been one of the best in the classroom and on the court," added Luke. "We obviously are quite honored to receive these awards."

Honorees must be academically a junior or senior, have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher, have spent one year at the institution and be a member of an NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Division I or II institution with a NABC member coach.
