Armga Scores 1,000th Point; Huskies Fall at Findlay

FINDLAY, Ohio – The Michigan Tech men's basketball team fell 86-73 in its first GLIAC road game of the season at No. 15-ranked Findlay on Thursday (Dec. 12) evening. Senior guard Austin Armga scored the 1,000th point of his career early in the second half on a jump shot and finished with 26 points in the game.

"They got off to a great start and we just didn't play very well at the beginning," Tech coach Kevin Luke said. "We got better in the second half but just didn't have enough at the end. They're a good team and their seniors stepped up down the stretch."

Armga became the 26th player in Tech men's basketball history with 1,000 points for his career after scoring 20 of his 26 points in the second half, including the jumper with 15:29 left in the game.

"Austin had a good second half and ended up with a great game," Luke added. "We just weren't aggressive enough in the first half."

Findlay (5-1, 2-1 GLIAC) held the Huskies to only 27 points in the first half and shot 62.5 percent from the floor. The Oilers also shot 20 more (27-7) free throws than Tech, outscoring the Huskies by 14 (19-5) at the line.

The Oilers held a 20-point lead four minutes into the second half. Tech went on a 13-3 run to get it down to 10 (57-47) with 13:36 remaining. Armga scored six while Ben Stelzer had five and James Wezensky added two in the run.

Tech continued to chip away and was down by only five (65-60) with 9:16 remaining, but the Oilers were too strong down the stretch, closing out the game on a 16-10 run in the final 6:50.

Stelzer also finished in double figures for the Huskies, scoring 14 points. Jason Hawke added nine while Alex Culy and Troy Hecht each tallied seven.

The Huskies are now 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the GLIAC after shooting 44 percent (29-for-66) from the field and 10-for-28 (36 percent) from 3-point territory. Tech out-rebounded UF 32-28.

GLIAC Preseason Player of the Year Greg Kahlig led all scorers with 32 on the night, making 11-of-16 shots and 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. Dylan Kaufman added 16 for the home team.

Findlay led 41-27 at the break after shooting 60 percent in the first half. Kahlig had 12 points in the opening half.

The Huskies finish the road trip at Hillsdale on Saturday (Dec. 14). Tipoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
