HOUGHTON, Mich. — Zack Friedli and Ryan Tervo have joined the Michigan Tech Athletics and Recreation Department it was announced today by Athletic Director Suzanne Sanregret. Friedli has been hired as director of new media, while Tervo has been named director of video production and graphic design.

“We’re happy to have Zack and Ryan on board, working to tell the stories from our department, teams and individuals,” said Sanregret. “Communication methods continue to evolve with video, social media and other digital platforms. Ryan and Zack both bring expertise which will help us continue as a leader in those areas and fully engage with our fans.”

Friedli spent the last two years working with USA Hockey—one year at the headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colo., and another with the U.S. National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, Mich. He served as the main media contact for numerous U.S. National Teams and aided in USA Hockey’s communication efforts during the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Friedli’s experience includes media relations, website design, social media management, writing and video content production.

A native of Rochester, Minn., Friedli gained a bachelor’s degree from Minnesota Duluth in 2013. He worked in UMD’s Sports Information Department and wrote for MNHockeyHub.com during his time as a student.

Friedli will serve as the media contact for Michigan Tech hockey, volleyball and tennis in addition to coordinating the department’s social media and web content. He will officially begin his duties Aug. 3.

“I’m thrilled to be a part of the athletic department at Michigan Tech,” said Friedli. “The school has a outstanding tradition of success and a loyal, engaged fan base. The opportunity to promote the University, teams and athletes is an exciting one.”

Tervo, who served two years as a graphic design graduate assistant at Michigan Tech from 2011-2014, returns to the department in a full-time role. The Chassell, Mich., native earned a bachelor’s degree in graphic communication from Northern Michigan in 2010 and a master’s of business administration from Michigan Tech in 2013.

While a graduate assistant at Tech, Tervo designed a vast array of projects. From print pieces to digital images and video to clothing, his creative work covered all aspects of Michigan Tech’s external visual presence. He was also responsible for creating the original content for the video board in the MacInnes Student Ice Arena and working on the crew for producing shows at Tech hockey games.

In his full-time role, Tervo will continue his work on both aspects of Michigan Tech Athletic’s communication and marketing efforts. He will be in charge of creating content and producing the live video at Tech hockey games and other events. He will also continue to serve as the department’s graphic designer.

“I’m happy to be back at Michigan Tech,” said Tervo. “This is a unique place with a great tradition of success.

“I had a great experience working here before, and I know there’s a large potential to make a difference with the work that I’ll be doing moving forward.”

Tervo began his duties on July 10.
