Sports In Brief for Oct. 19, 2014

Top News of the Week

HOCKEY BACK TO ACTION FRIDAY
Michigan Tech hockey returns to action on the ice this weekend with a two-game series at No. 4-ranked Ferris State. The Huskies opened their season Oct. 4-5 with a sweep of Lake Superior State but have not played a regular-season game since. FSU is coming off a weekend split at St. Lawrence Oct. 17-18. The series sets up as a critical matchup as Ferris State and Michigan Tech were picked second and third in the preseason WCHA coaches poll, respectively.

SHERMAN FIELD SHOWDOWN: 6-0 HUSKIES VS. 7-0 BULLDOGS

No. 20-ranked Michigan Tech rolled past Grand Valley State 35-14 last week to move to 6-0 on the season. The Huskies, who are on an eight-game win streak dating back to last year, haven’t started a campaign 6-0 since 2004. Tech hosts the only other undefeated team in the GLIAC in No. 11 Ferris State this week. The game, which has major implications for both league standings and NCAA Playoff hopes, kicks off at Sherman Field at 1 p.m.

DOGS VS. DOGS WEEKEND

Michigan Tech faces Ferris State in four different sports this weekend. Big Rapids is hosting a WCHA hockey series and a volleyball match between the Huskies and Bulldogs while Houghton will be the site of key football and women’s soccer contests. It’s also possible that the women’s tennis teams will meet at the GLIAC Tournament.

TWO MORE ONE-GOAL WINS FOR SOCCER

Michigan Tech earned a pair of 1-0 wins at Sherman Field last weekend with victories over Findlay (Oct. 17) and Tiffin (Oct. 19). The Huskies scored in the final 12 minutes of both games to improve to 9-1-1 overall. Seven of those nine wins have come by a margin of one goal. Tech, which is the final unbeaten team in the GLIAC, hosts Ferris State Friday (Oct. 24) and Grand Valley State on Sunday (Oct. 26).

TENNIS PICKS UP THIRD WIN

The Michigan Tech women’s tennis team kept itself alive for a spot in the GLIAC Tournament with a 7-2 victory at Lake Superior State last Saturday (Oct. 18). Junior Kwang Suthijindawong continued her undefeated GLIAC singles career (34-0) with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. The Huskies play two regular season matches this week and still has hopes of qualifying for the GLIAC Tournament in Midland Oct. 24-26.

VOLLEYBALL COMPETES AT CROSSOVER

Michigan Tech won one of its three matches at the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover in Aurora, Ill., last weekend. The victory was a five-set affair with UW-Parkside on Saturday (Oct. 18). Not only did the Huskies claim their first five-set triumph of the season, they avenged a 3-1 loss to the Rangers in the season opener at the SDC Gym. Tech’s volleyball team plays its final two road matches of the regular season this weekend before returning home for its final five.
