Sports In Brief for Sept. 28, 2014

Top News of the Week

HOCKEY SEASON IS HERE!
Michigan Tech begins its quest for the MacNaughton Cup Saturday (Oct. 4) with a WCHA game right out of the gate. The Huskies travel to Taffy Abel Arena to face Lake Superior State for the weekend series with league points on the line. Tech coach Mel Pearson will be facing former assisant Damon Whitten in the U.P. rivalry. The teams split the four games they played against each other a year ago. Tech won’t play a regular season game at home until Oct. 31, when Michigan comes to Houghton.

MEAD DOES IT AGAIN!
For the second time this season, Garrett Mead kicked a field goal on the game’s final play to give Michigan Tech a victory. The senior made a 39-yard try as time expired for the winning points in a 34-31 triumph at Northern Michigan Saturday (Sept. 27). Mead was six-for-six on kicks in the game with four extra points and a pair of 39-yard field goals. In the season opener (Sept. 4), it was a 25-yard shot that gave the Huskies an 18-17 victory at Wayne State.

HUSKIES DOUBLES PAIR IS REGION CHAMPS
Kwang Suthijindawong and Sandra Cvetanovic claimed the ITA Midwest Region Doubles Championship Sunday (Sept. 28) with an 8-6 victory over Wayne State’s Yahsha Moore and Anne Li Briand in the final. Suthijindawong also made the final in singles, but finished as the ITA Midwest Region Runner-Up. As regional champions, the Huskies pair will advance to the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships Oct. 9-12 in Sumter, South Carolina.

MINER’S CUP RETURNS TO HOUGHTON
Michigan Tech retained possession of the Miner’s Cup for the fifth consecutive year after Saturday’s 34-31 victory at Northern Michigan. The Huskies have won 11 of the last 14 meetings with the Wildcats including 10 of the last 13 since the rivalry trophy was installed for the 2002 season.

SOCCER CONTINUES TO ROLL
Michigan Tech won its fourth consecutive match and third straight by a 2-1 score as it defeated Ashland on the road Sunday (Sept. 28). Jacqueline Mielke scored a goal early in the second half and assisted on the other one three minutes later to give the Huskies the come-from-behind victory. Mielke paces the team with 10 points on four goals and two assists in five games this season. Tech returns home for two more GLIAC contests this weekend.

VOLLEYBALL SPLITS AT HOME

The Huskies’ volleyball team had a bittersweet weekend after a 3-2 loss to Findlay Friday (Sept. 26) and a 3-1 win over Hillsdale Saturday (Sept. 27). Tech was three points away from victory with a 22-20 lead in set four on Friday, but couldn’t close it out. THe Huskies bounced back nicely on Saturday. Freshman Lauren Emmert led the way on the week with 46 kills, a .384 hitting percentage and seven blocks. The Huskies head to Canton, Ohio, for a pair of GLIAC matches next weekend.
