Ferris State Tennis Teams Dominate Michigan Tech To Open Weekend Homestand
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's tennis squads had a strong day of action on Friday (April 19) as both teams rolled to identical 6-1 wins over visiting Michigan Tech at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center.
The Bulldog men's team clinched at least a share of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship with the win while the women also recorded a decisive victory over the Huskies.
The FSU women moved to 11-8 overall and 5-1 in conference play with the win in the opener. It marked Ferris State's seventh win in the last eight matches overall.
The Bulldog women took the doubles point in the match with wins at the top two flights and FSU then proceeded to claim five of the six singles flights while notching the triumph.
"On the women's side, we had a great comeback win at two doubles to claim the doubles point," said FSU head coach Mark Doren. "Then, early in singles play, Morgan Waller rolled her ankle and her teammates' really stepped up the intensity. We can clinch the #2 seed at the GLIAC Tournament with a win tomorrow."
In men's action, Ferris State improved to 14-4 overall with its ninth consecutive win this year. The Bulldogs are also now 5-0 in conference play and sit atop the league standings.
FSU fell in the doubles round against the Huskies, but came back to win all six singles flights.
"Kudos to Michigan Tech for coming out hot in doubles and taking it to us," said Doren. "Our focus was to come out focused and not have a let down after our big win last week, but unfortunately we were a little slow in doubles. But, we rebounded well and played good in singles overall."
The Bulldogs will host Lake Superior State in GLIAC play on Saturday (April 20) starting at 10 a.m. (ET) for the women and 2 p.m. (ET) for the men in Big Rapids.
