Women's Basketball Unable to Slow Down Michigan Tech in 95-75 Loss

The Warriors had 74 attempts from the field on Thursday evening.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (16-9 overall, 9-7 GLIAC) ran into a hot shooting Michigan Tech squad (13-10 overall, 9-6 GLIAC) and fell 95-75 on Thursday evening inside the Wayne State Fieldhouse to begin the final regular season home stand for 2023-24.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The opening 10 minutes were tight and well-contested, with a total of 52 points tallied between the two sides.  Wayne State scored five of the game's first seven points on a triple by sophomore forward Gabi Lutchka (Grass Lake, Mich.) and a jumper from sophomore forward Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.).  The Warriors would lead by as many as seven (18-11) with 5:37 remaining on another Lutchka three-pointer, but the Huskies would out-score WSU 15-8 over the final 5:12 to knot the score at 26-26 following the first period.  A three-pointer from Alex Rondorf tied the score at that number with 18 seconds to play.

Second Quarter
A 12-2 advantage by Michigan Tech in the opening 3:25 of the new stanza gave the guests a 10-point lead (38-28).  That would be the beginning of a second quarter in which MTU more than doubled-up Wayne State in points scored at 27-13.  The Huskies led by as many as 16 on their 50th point of the half (a Tessa Leece lay-up), and closed out the beginning 20 minutes with a 14-point lead (53-39).

Michigan Tech missed just four total shot attempts in the first half, going 21-of-25 for 84 percent from the field.  They also connected on nine of their 12 tries from beyond the arc for 75 percent.

Third Quarter
MTU's lights-out shooting continued to begin the second half, as the Huskies drained four three-pointers in the span of just over three minutes to move ahead by 22 (65-43) with 6:24 left.  Emma Anderson sank a trio of those triples for Michigan Tech.  The guests out-paced the hosts 12-5 over the final 4:36, and held the Green and Gold to nine points in the 10-minute segment.

Fourth Quarter
Wayne State pressed in the fourth in an effort to make a comeback, but fell short despite taking 21 shots and connecting on 12 of those attempts (57 percent).  A free throw courtesy of junior forward Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) cut the Warriors' deficit to 18 (82-64) with 4:36 remaining, while a jump shot by Thompson make it a 17-point contest (83-66) with 3:27 to play.  However, the home team was unable to get any closer as Michigan Tech obtained 12 of the game's final 21 points to emerge with the 20-point victory.

TEAM STATS
In what was an impressive display of shooting all evening, Michigan Tech made 36 of their 49 attempts from the floor (73 percent) for the game.  Wayne State had 74 tries from the field and was good on 31 of those (42 percent).  The Huskies were difficult to contain beyond the arc, as the visitors sank 17-of-24 three-pointers (71 percent), compared to WSU's 40 percent (6-of-15).  The Warriors went to the charity stripe 13 times and connected on seven foul shots (54 percent), while MTU was 6-of-14 (43 percent) for the contest from the free throw line.  Michigan Tech out-rebounded Wayne State 34-29, and collected 11 blocked shots to the Green and Gold's two.  WSU had 15 steals to MTU's eight.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Thompson had a career night with a personal best 23 points on 11-of-17 shooting.  That also led all scorers in the match-up.  The forward grabbed eight rebounds to lead Wayne State.  Tripp supplied 19 points, while junior guard Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) poured in 13 on 6-of-9 shooting.  The other Warrior in double-figures for the contest was Lutchka with 11, including three triples.  Redshirt senior guard Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino (Central Michigan)) paced all players with nine assists, which also broke a career high for the graduating senior.

LEADING THE HUSKIES
Anderson registered 22 points to lead Michigan Tech, doing so with nine made shots on 11 tries and four three-pointers in six attempts.  Leece (18), Rondorf (15), Isabella Lenz (10), and Maja Kozlowska (10) also joined the double-figures club for MTU.  Lenz had eight rebounds, three steals, and six assists, with the six dimes tying Leece for the Huskies' lead in the affair.  Kozlowska garnered five of the visitors' 11 blocks on the evening.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will play on Saturday against Northern Michigan in what will be Senior Day inside Wayne State Fieldhouse.  McArthur and redshirt senior guard Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) will be honored for their contributions to the women's basketball program prior to the 1 p.m. tip between the Warriors and Wildcats.
