Huskies Raise over $1,900 for the Women Living With Cancer Support Group

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer and volleyball team's dedicated a season home game to raise money for the Women Living With Cancer Support Group, a group that provides support for cancer patients, sponsored by UP Health Systems. A grand total of $1,946 was donated to the organization from the team's fundraising efforts.

The Women Living with Cancer Support Group is a local, supportive group of women that meet monthly for discussion, speakers and to share their cancer journey. Each student-athlete had a pink warmup t-shirt that fans bid on online leading up to Sunday's Oct. 15 soccer match and Friday's Oct. 20 volleyball match. Monetary donations and items for care packages were also donated as part of the initiative.

Soccer's "Let's Kick Cancer Game" raised $1,128 through the bidding of the warmup t-shirts and monetary donations. Volleyball's "Kills for Cancer" raised $818 in total donations.

The Women Living with Cancer Support Group made a total of 340 Comfort Kits with Tech's support so far which have been given to Portage and Aspirus for patients undergoing treatments. The group also purchased 30 $35 gas cards and gave 15 to Aspirus and 15 to Portage to their oncology units for cancer patients in active treatment. The Tech soccer team hosts rival Northern Michigan, Friday Oct. 27 at 5 p.m. at Sherman Field. The volleyball team is on the road for a pair of GLIAC matchups, Friday (Oct. 27) at Saginaw Valley State and Saturday (Oct. 28) at Lake Superior State.
