Michigan Tech to Receive NCAA CHOICES Grant

HOUGHTON, Mich. – Michigan Tech is one of just 15 schools nationally to be named a recipient of an NCAA CHOICES grant, which is awarded to NCAA member institutions or conferences that are viewed as leaders in the efforts to reduce alcohol abuse on college campuses nationwide.

The NCAA CHOICES program, which is supported by the NCAA Foundation and Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc., provides funding to aid in campus-wide alcohol abuse reduction programs and education.

Michigan Tech's proposed work will initiate an informed and consistent conversation that creates an athlete-driven campaign where making legal, healthy, appropriate and safe choices about alcohol becomes the socially accepted norm. Tech's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will help lead the efforts to reach the entire student-athlete population, and the athletic department will partner with Student Wellness to implement the program across campus.

"Michigan Tech is thrilled to be able to empower our students with the #MTUstepsUP program along with equipping them with the strategies to make choices that are legal, healthy, appropriate and safe about alcohol," said Whitney Boroski, coordinator of health and wellness. "Student Affairs, Athletics, The Office of Academic and Community Conduct, The Office of Institutional Equity, and Wellness, are committed and excited about the possibilities that may unfold over the course of the next three years."

"This is an incredibly exciting honor for Michigan Tech," said Kate Hagenbuch, director of NCAA compliance and student-athlete services. "The grant will help us enhance our current programming and give us even more opportunities to positively impact the community. The dedication and hard work by Whitney to secure this grant will greatly benefit everyone involved."

The three-year grant will go into effect starting in Fall 2016. For the complete NCAA release, click here.
