Kirk McDonnell enters his second season as a Director of Athletics Communications at Michigan Tech after spending two years as the Sports Information Director at Mount Vernon Nazarene University. McDonnell was the Director of Athletics Communications at Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi for six years prior to his time at MVNU.

McDonnell was involved in all phases of communication for all the athletics programs at Belhaven and MVNU. Duties included doing in game stats, writing press releases, producing media guides, game notes, website maintenance, social media, video and broadcasting, along with game day operations and promotions.

On the national level, McDonnell served as the primary media contact for two NAIA National Baseball Championship Opening Round tournaments, four NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship Opening Round games, an NAIA Softball Opening Round Tournament, and an NAIA Volleyball National Tournament Opening Round match He was also the official statistician for the 2011 NAIA Men's Soccer National Semifinals and Championship contests. In 2011 and 2013 he was named the Southern States Athletic Conference Sports Information Director of the Year and served on the SSAC's marketing committee.

Prior to working at Belhaven, McDonnell worked in radio news and sports for Clear Channel Communications and was a Resident Director, Director of Intramurals, and Sports Broadcaster for Mount Vernon Nazarene University. He also spent time helping out in the Kenyon College Sports Information Department.

A native of Delaware, OH, McDonnell is a 1999 graduate of Mount Vernon Nazarene University with a degree in Communications Broadcasting. In 2008, he completed his Master's of Business Administration degree with an emphasis in Sports, Arts, and Entertainment Management from Point Park University in Pittsburgh, PA.
